I am currently living and working in the UK on a tier1 HSMP visa. I have a South African passport that still has 2.5 years of validity left. However I have run out of space and can no longer fit any more visas in it for travelling purposes (some of which would be work related). The South African embassy says that having my passport replaced will take 4 months. This is a very lengthy time to be without a passport so I am considering alternatives. I have dual nationality and also have a Mauritian passport, which is afforded the same rights as South Africa as a commonwealth country and former British colony. Is it possible to have my work permit transferred to my Mauritian passport, Im not sure what would be involved in something like that as it involves two different countries.
Failing that, what are my alternatives to hanging onto my current South
African passport while my new passport application is processed. Would I be able to submit an alternative form of documentation for my passport renewal application? (I realise this is more of a question for the South African embassy, but I figure there must be some kind of general international standard when it comes to this type of procedure)
Any help on this topic would be appreciated
Thanks
