Changing Surname after ILR

Post by saaji93 » Mon May 13, 2019 12:26 pm

Hi Guys

I have applied ILR for My wife and kid and its recently approved .
I want to change my wife and daughters surname . Actually we don't normally use surname in south India and use only first letter of Father first name . But When first passport taken , they used my first name as surname for both My wife and daughter .
My first Name quite long with three names and I just want to shorten surname for my wife and daughter .

What procedure to change the name ?
Also Next year they may be due for British Passport and want the corrected name to appear?
Please advise.

Name changes must first be done in your Indian passport or else you cannot get British passport with any other name.
To change your name legally in the UK you can use deed poll.

Hi Zimba

Thanks for your reply .

We just BRP card and if we change the Name in Indian passport --Will I have to apply for New BRP card as well before British passport ?

If we change the surname using deed poll , Indian embassy accept this proof for changing the Name.

Please advise

Yes you must get a new BRP with the new name. Deed poll in the UK has nothing to do with other countries so it may not be accepted in India. Every country has its own name changing process. I suggest to to consult the Indian embassy on the process, change your name legally in India and get a new Indian passport. Then you can get new BRP with the new name without a deed poll. Deed poll will be optional or for legal purposes in the UK.
British passport will only be issued in the name matching your Indian passport as per law even

Hi Zimba

Thanks for your reply .

Will there be cost effective if we change the surname after we get naturalisation ? Then we have to surrender the indian passport next year ? Other wise we have to apply for New BRP it cost £ 229 per person and also new Indian passport cost with changing Name

Please advise
