Citizenship - Dept. of Justice lost my passports (on return)

Post by jsiron » Wed May 15, 2019 1:27 pm

Hi all, here's what happened:

1- Application posted on : 14/01/2019
2- Application reviewed and accepted on: 15/01/2019
3- Passports + letter were returned on: 16/01/2019 (two days later)

However, I never received my passports back at my address which I only found out by chance via email on 08/04/2019 (3 months later) that they had already been returned in January. A report was then made with Garda.

Now in May they told by phone that my application is in the 2nd stage (good news) but they don't know where the passport is and cannot provide the Express Post tracking number either .

Has anyone or know someone that has been through anything similar? What other actions I could take?
Since the first letter also got lost, has anyone asked them for 2nd copy?

I'm sorry to hear that. I had always wondered if someone would lose my passport every time I apply for a visa etc. I can imagine how painful that situation must be.

Regarding the letter - you don't need them. They serve no extra purposes other than a notification.

You should write a formal complaint letter to them asking them to find out the tracking number if possible. Apply for a new passport ASAP and book an appointment with INIS to get a new stamp on your passport and a new IRP card. They shouldn't charge you any money if you explain to them nicely that INIS lost your passport.

Also keep all your receipts for having to apply for a new passport - photo fee, transportation, passport fee etc. Either INIS or An Post should be able to at least cover some of those fees.
