Where do I start?

Hello respected people,

I am qualified scientist and quite new to the Uk
( 1 month since arrival).I Came on a visitors visa for 6 months.However I would like to change my visa to a work permit without having to go back to my motherland which is a commonwealth country .
My question is how and where do I start? Is it doable? I have researched several companies that can sponsor me and applied for jobs even though i have not heard from them yet.
Please can someone please send me links that could be of any help incase there is any .
Please shed some light on the steps I need to take to get a work permit.

Its not permitted to apply for any other category of visa from within the UK while here as a visitor.
