Double Tax Treaty - Ireland/US

Post by iamwhoever » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:19 pm

I'm moving to Ireland next month. I start my job in September. I was wondering if anyone here knows the details of the Double Tax Treaty between Ireland and the US. I was trying to read publication 54 on the IRS website. I also looked at the Tax Treaty on the Irish Revenue website. Well, though I'm going to be training as an accountant, I'm not going into tax, and don't know too much about it. I believe up to about $85,000 may be exempt. I guess I was hoping that maybe someone had gone through this and can explain it to me in a much clearer way. If not, at least I'll be surrounded by tax people in Ireland, and hopefully someone will be able to help me out at a later date. Thanks.

An american friend was filling some US tax forms each year. if i remember correctly, he needed to fill those forms, but he would only need to pay any tax to US if the tax he paid in Ireland was less than the tax he would pay in US. Though I would not say for sure :)

I can't remember the exact threshold, but is is about $85,000USD per year that is exempt, like you said. I don't know how it works beyond that, because I don't make over that lol. In any case, even if you make below that, you are still expected to file a federal and state tax returns every year, even though you won't owe anything. Check with your last state of residence to see what the filing requirements are, some states don't require it.

If you want detailed info, the US Embassy in Dublin might have some info to at least get you started, and I would imagine you'd be able to find an accountant in Ireland that is qualified to deal with US taxes.
