ILR (UK) - Can I travel with double-barrelled name on BRP but maiden name on passport?

Post by dragonjen » Fri Jul 19, 2019 11:30 am

Hi there: I have Indefinite Leave to Remain and I originally used a double-barrelled my name on my biometric residence permit. However, I am now divorced and just have changed the name on my passport back to my non-double-barrelled name.

My travel plans are happening before I have time to change my biometric residence permit to match my passport.

I've seen others on this forum have travelled with different maiden and married names on their passport and biometric permit as long as they carry their marriage certificate at the airport.

Would the same apply here if I showed them my divorce papers?

Or do the BRP and passport have to match?

I'd like to think my situation is a bit easier as both documents have my maiden name. The BRP just has the added double-barrel at the end...

Any help welcome! :) Thanks

Your Biometric card has data that proves your identity and your divorce papers should be enough to get you through the border. I'm not sure if you could face issues with the Airlines though

Thanks for the reply!

I should be ok with the airlines as I normally don't have to show my BRP - my name on the ticket will match the passport.

I was more concerned about whether the UK border agency would give me hassle because the names aren't identical between the passport and BRP.

There is no airline who don't check BRP flying towards UK even from home country. Without checking a traveller's visa/immigration status an airline can heavily be fined.
In your case at least on UK airports you won't get any hassle as long as you have marriage & divorce certificate.

I am going to assume the OP is a Canadian citizen given the chosen flag.
Canadians are non-visa nationals which means that they are not required to hold a UK visa as they can come here as visitors. While the non-visa nationals may hold UK resident permits with a BRP, an airline will not ask them for UK a visa or a BRP before boarding unlike visa nationals

Many thanks for clarification because I just use my smartphone to surf the forum which never shows flags, member status normal member/guru/senior/number of posts which of course is out of my interest too. But your assumption is correct if that's the case.
