How do i prove citizenship

Post by Donnagrumps » Mon Sep 09, 2019 4:20 pm

I was born in Australia to British parents . I came ti live in Scotland when i was 8 years old . I have always been a british citizen and until now never had to prove otherwise. I recently moved house and when attempting to change my address on my driving licence I hit a brick wall. My current full driving licence is the old style paper one I do not have a valid passport as I have not travelled abroad since I was about 18. I am now 54 and have no intention of travelling abroad . They are unable to confirm my identity because obviously I have an Australian birth certificate and no passport. I have been to citizeans advice and they are unsure how i can prove my citizenship other than applying for a passport . I do not have a spare £80 to apply for a passport that I am never going to use . Does anyone know how I can prove my citizenship to the DVLA . I would be grateful for any response.

A passport is the cheapest, and likely the best (as it has your photograph + can be used to travel abroad if you change your mind), way in which to prove your Briitish citizenship.

You can also apply for a letter confirming your British nationality, but not only is it useless in case you wish to travel abroad, it also costs about £250.

It is important to know that it is a criminal offence to drive in the UK if you are here unlawfully since Immigration Act 2016 came into force. So a British passport or confirmation of such is necessary when renewing with DVLA as a British citizen

Thankyou for the replies I guess a passport is my only option. I am 100% a British citizen both my parents are Scottish and I have been here since 1973 . My last British passport ran out in 1985.
