Tier 2 (General) Extension - What happens to the original BRP?

Hi guys, sorry if this is a daft question, but I'm trying to figure out what happened to my BRP after I was granted my first Tier 2 (general) visa.

My first Tier 2 (General) was from November 14, 2017-2018. My employer then extended this for another two years, and I attended a priority appointment to apply for this second Tier 2 (general) valid for two years, from 2017-2019. The BRP was then posted to me.

I've kept meticulous organization of my previous passports and documents, but I do not have the first BRP. I can't remember if they took this off me when I went to my appointment, because otherwise I have no reason not to still have it. Does anyone remember if you are required to hand in your original if you are getting a new Tier 2 extension?

Yes, they take the old one. That's one of the mandatory documents that you need to submit as part of your application. Your can check the application that you submitted (if you kept the softcopy/pdf) and see the documents they asked you to submit.
