Want to live in Ireland- US citizen married to Irish Citizen

Post by AliciaB33 » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:41 pm

Hello,

My husband and i have been married for almost 2 years now. We just recently had a son back in March. My husband just got his green card here in the US. Hopefully once he gets dual citizenship being Irish and American we hope to move back to Ireland. We are soon getting our son citizenship there.
What are the procedures for me going to Ireland. I have read that being a US citizen i have a right to be in Ireland and i just can go in on a passport and tell an immigration officer that I'm planning on living in Ireland. Then they would stamp my passport and register at a office nearby where i am living. That seems to easy though, isn't there a catch? Wouldn't i need a spouse visa before going into Ireland. Would it be the same rules if we lived in Northern Ireland? How could i show proof that my husband has been working if we are going to live in Ireland at the same time?
If my husband has to sponsor me would he have to make a lot of money?
If someone could please answer some of these questions it would be great, so much information I'm getting is confusing.

Many thanks-

alicia

There is no way to get a spouse visa from outside of Ireland. So, what you would need to do is enter Ireland on a visa waiver and then go to the Garda National Immigration Bureau to apply for a Stamp 4 based on marriage to an Irish citizen. Try doing a search on the Ireland board on this forum; there are quite a few that have posted what they needed to bring with them.

Now, you mentioned Northern Ireland...which is part of the UK do an entirely different process applies. If you are wanting to live in Northern Ireland, the entry clearance needs to be applied for from a British consualte in the US.

So those are the basics. However, if you are planning on being in the US for another couple of years for your husband to get US citizenship, then things may be radically different by that time. Both countries have immigration bills on the table so there may be a lot of changes between now and the time you're looking to leave. So, just try to keep up on things from time to time so you know what needs to be done when you are close to moving.
