Irish Citizenship through Foreign Birth registered parent

Post by JMH-2 » Sat Feb 15, 2020 7:14 pm

Hi all,

Looking for guidance as I’m looking into my “entitlement” to Irish citizenship.

My great-grandparents were the last of my family to be born in Ireland, which by default entitles my mother to apply for Irish citizenship via foreign births registration. My question is, following this, what is my position in obtaining citizenship and a passport?

Ask mainly due to the fact I work for a company with headquarters in Dublin - would make life easier should I choose to move.

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi, no dice sadly as your mother would have needed to register on the FBR prior to your birth. There’s another route open to GGC through “associations” with Ireland but this seems opaque and not very realistic.

Naturalisation is the other route though this has to be earned over 5 years rather than it being an “entitlement” in law as is FBR.
