Please help - researching moving to UK

Post by thirstydeer » Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:15 am

Hello.

Bit of a story here. I'm a Canadian citizen residing in Canada. I met my wife online and we married back in 2007. She is British and moved to Canada in May 2008 so we can be together. Since then, we've tossed the idea around of going to the UK. What would it take for us to move back there with me already being married to a UK citizen and that she's only been out of the country for a few months and wants to move back and bring me with her? For whatever category I fit under, what are the requirements? I really don't know where to start.

Thanks in advance.

The website of the British High Commission in Canada would be a good place to start.

You need a spouse visa. All the relevant information is on the BIA website and on UKVisas.

Is your wife now a permanent resident of Canada?

Yeah, she's now a permanent resident of Canada. I know that means if we move to the UK, then she'll lose her status in Canada as a requirement is to be in Canada for 2 out of 5 years.

Perhaps she should apply for Canadian citizenship before you apply for a spouse visa.

Why do you suggest that? The security of knowing that if UK immigration doesn't work then we both have no issues staying or returning to Canada?
