Getting another citizenship after getting ILR

Post by jafersadeq » Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:59 pm

Dear Gurus,

I applied for another citizenship (Not UK, not my home citizenship), and I applied for ILR.
If I get ILR and after three months I get the another citizenship and passport. Shall I inform the Home Office about my second citizenship (the first one is fro my home country), I will not use that passport to travel till I apply for UK citizenship.
If I do not inform them and I mention it in my UK naturalization application, is that a problem?
After getting ILR, no immigration rules will apply, is that right?

Please advise
Thanks

Whilst not 100% sure about ILR application form normally most application forms ask a question "whether you are waiting the outcome of any visa/nationality application anywhere". That question must have been answered correctly (if was asked).

No. Simply declare this during the citizenship process

UK authorities don't care really.

You have an ILR in the UK and imagine you find an ancestor somewhere in the world and that qualifies you to some citizenship. UK authorities won't care. You are a foreign national getting a foreign citizenship.

Even if you were British they wouldn't care more.

Some countries such as Germany are very cautious with multiple citizenship but only for their own citizens not for foreign residents as they don't fall under citizenship law.

Declare it only when/if you apply for British citizenship.

The UK does not care how many other nationalities you have, but you must declare them to the Home Office on any application you make, even if you don't have a passport of that country.

So long as you don't mislead the Home Office about your nationalities at the time of any application, you will be fine. You don't need to keep them updated about changes to the current nationalities that you hold.

Omitting that information on any application you make after getting the other citizenship will likely count as deception and can be grounds for depriving you of your British citizenship if you did not disclose that information at the time of your naturalisation application.
