Reserving flights when applying for visas, Macedonia to UK

We are in the process of applying for a visiting visa from Macedonia to the UK. We have all the paperwork and finances in place but have been told that we need proof of flight reservation. When I tried to do this on the net it would only let me reserve it for 24hrs. Does anyone know a way of reserving it for longer as the visa application may take longer to process than 24hrs and the reservation would then be cancelled. Im reluctant to pay for the flight if we dont know he definately has the visa. Any thougts?? Thank you

Can you use a travel agent instead?
