Good character recommendation letter for 20 years long residence route

My friend is planning to apply visa in the UK via 20 Years Long Residence and was over stayed for a long period of time. I was asked to provide good character supporting letter. I am planning to apply my ILR next year. is there anyway that I can be in trouble for doing this, esp. when I made my own ILR application?

Ordinarily providing a truthful reference should not put you in jeopardy albeit 'truthful' is subjective in this case.

Yes it can affect even you were not aware where if UKVI finds something wrong about him.
