Russian wife, Change of name after BRP issued

Post by bobblehead » Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:51 am

Hello,

My wife has a temporary visa (BRP card) to stay in the UK until 2024, we avoided changing her name prior to her moving as it would have delayed her visa process.

In order for her to change her name she will at some point need to go to Russia to do this and get a new passport. When she returns to the UK her passport and her BRP will then be in a different name... is there a grace period to allow her to enter on these documents? Or is there a form or permission we need to get prior to her doing this...

I looked at changing her name on the BRP card first but it need supporting documents to do this and obviously we don't have these.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If she is willing to adopt the married name then there wouldn't be any bureaucratic rules in UK rather simply the passport need to be updated with the married name as in marriage certificate. And then you can apply for a replacement BRP card which procedure seems of already be known to you.
The opinion expressed as above is neither a professional advice nor contesting/competing to other member's opinion/advice.

Hi! As being Ukrainian and taking my husband's surname, I went through this about 1-2 years ago.
You do need new Russian passport with her new surname in order to change her BRP ( via Transfer of circumstances procedure). You have to apply for new BRP within 3 mo this after changing her surname.
Could she change her surname via her embassy bin the UK?
That's what I did. I took just 1.5 year from my government to allow me to change my surname and then issue me a new passport, but hey, who cares at the end? I was trying to avoid doing it in my home country, as I wasn't sure that I could leave my country with a new passport and retain my old passport. They usually take it away.
If change of name is not possible in the UK via embassy, you might want to wait till she gets UK citizenship and then changes her surname.
