Which Passport to Use?

Post by George7371 » Thu Nov 05, 2020 2:01 pm

Hello Everyone,

I recently naturalized as a British citizen and am now a holder of a British passport.

I am a dual citizen and therefore, I now have two passports to travel with.

I was hoping I can get the opinion of fellow dual nationals when it comes to international travel and which passport to use at certain points.

Here’s a typical scenario; a flight from the UK to the EU and back.

I’m quite clear on using my British passport when entering the UK and my EU passport when going through immigration in the EU country.

However, I’m unclear on what passport details to provide on the advanced passenger information (API) to the airline.

If I provide the details of my British passport, the airline might want additional details to ensure I will be admitted in the EU (as they won’t know I’m also an EU national). Not so much an issue now, but when ETIAS goes live in a couple of years they might require proof of some sort.

If I use my EU passport, then when leaving for the UK, they might want proof that I will be admitted into the UK (as they won’t know I’m a British national). Again not a big issue now as travel is likely to remain visa free between the EU and the UK but if this changes, then not really sure.

Are you able to switch the API details for each flight?

Grateful for your thoughts.

Thanks

In my opinion, giving detail of either of these passports won't make any difference as long as you are carrying both. If the airport/border officers will have any question then on presenting them the relevant passport would clarify it instantly.
The opinion expressed as above is neither a professional advice nor contesting/competing to other member's opinion/advice.
