Partner living in non-eu country - best route to start a family in the UK

Post by Alexiarosie » Sun Dec 27, 2020 1:32 pm

Hello all,

I'm from the UK and I'm in a relationship with a Lebanese man and have been together for a few years now . We have been flying back and fourth throughout our time and are now looking at making a permanent life in the UK. I have a son from a previous relationship and us moving to Lebanon is not an option due to me being a student nurse and my son starting school in September 2021 - also my ex partner would not accept our son living abroad. We just feel that the quality of life is just much better in the UK too.

He owns a Jewellery business in Beirut but with the difference in economies between countries he wouldn't be able to have a substantial income to be able to support the British life. I qualify in 2 years time and will be able to start earning properly and he wants to bring his company and start his business in England. In the near future we want to start to settle down and start a family but just don't see how to make it work.

I have continuously read the UK boarder agency website and I'm still not sure what the best way to proceed is.. Marriage? general visitor visa?
I have also seen that quite a few applications get rejected. We're so scared of this happening.
I've seen that for someone to come over they would need around £18,000 to support the family which is money that we just don't have.
Does anyone have any experience in their partner immigrating from a non-eu country?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Marriage visitor visa allows you to get married in the UK but he must return back to Lebanon to apply for spouse visa while if he applied for spouse visa from abroad, you can apply directly from Lebanon and meet the financial requirement £18,600 but both of you must be married or another option is to apply for fiancée visa which allows you to get married in the UK then you can switch to spouse visa within UK.

You as the British partner need to earn at least 18600£/year or be able to make up the shortfall with savings.

be able to make up the shortfall with savings.
And the formula to calculate how much savings you need to make up the shortfall is

((18600-current annual gross salary)*2.5)+16,000

Or £16,000 + 2.5 times the difference between £18,600 and the current annual gross salary.
