Hello everybody,

If my Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) BRP card has an issue date of 05-12-2019, when can I apply for British citizenship?

If you are not married to a British citizen, the earliest you can apply is one year after the date of grant of ILR, provided you were physically present in the UK five years before the date of application for naturalisation.

You can, provided you were physically present in the UK on 7th December 2015.

And what process is this ‘naturalisation’?

Naturalisation is the process by which a non-British adult generally acquires British citizenship. Once you have been naturalised (your application has been approved AND you have attended a citizenship ceremony), you are issued with a citizenship certificate. You can then apply for a British passport with that certificate.

Can I not just directly apply for the British passport?

No. Only British citizens are issued with British passports. If you are not a British citizen, you need to naturalise in order to become a British citizen and can then apply for a British passport.

On the Referees List of acceptable professional persons, I have read that I can get a 'director of a limited company' to provide reference for me (provided he has known me for 3 years).

Is it correct?

On a closer inspection of 'List of acceptable professional persons', I realised that there are 2 similar categories:

1- Director/Manager of a VAT registered Charity

2- Chairman/director of limited company

Does it mean that 'Director of limited company' that is not VAT registered can also be my referee?

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Can anybody advise me how should I get the professional referee details?

Is there a form that needs to be filled or his details just has to be typed on a plain paper and his signature has to be taken on that paper.

It's part of the online form. You fill in the details, at the end of the process you down load/print it, pasted your photos in and get each referee to sign the forms. Then upload with the other supporting documents.

Can I paste my photo on the form, scan it, and send it across to the referee?

The referee will then print that scanned copy and sign it.

He will then rescan the signed form having my photograph & his signature and email it back to me.

Is that acceptable?

Hello,

I managed to get two references – Professional and Personal both.

The Professional reference is fine. My accountant who knows me for 5 years has given this reference.

But in the Personal reference I am doubtful about 2 things:
1- The second referee in his profession has mentioned himself as a ‘Director’. (Is this okay as this is meant to be a personal reference?)
2- Also the company that he has mentioned himself to be a director shows the status as ‘Dissolved’ on Companies House. That means currently he is the director of a ‘dissolved’ company.

Please advise as I do not want to take a risk and jeopardise my application.

For an adult application, one referee should be a person of any nationality who has professional standing, eg minister of religion, civil servant, or a member of a professional body e.g. accountant or solicitor (who is not representing you with this application).
For all applications, the second referee must normally be the holder of a British citizen passport and either a professional person or over the age of 25.

He must be a British Citizen and over 25 in the case you mentioned. His profession does not matter then. The form asks how the referee knows the applicant. He can mention “friend” or whatever your relationship is.

7. English test certificate at B1 Level (or a degree certificate that is recognised by the Home Office for this purpose).

8. Marriage certificate.

9. Details of referees.

10. Referee's declaration document signed by each referee. (Professional and Personal both).

11. My Parents details (Name, date of birth and nationality).

12. My last 10 years employment history (Start date and end date, employer name, position
held).

14. My last 5 years address history (address, when did I start and when did I leave).

I am not applying for British citizenship on the basis of my spouse. I was on entrepreneur visa and have got my ILR on that basis. It is one year since I got my ILR.
In this scenario will your answers still be the same.
