HSMP-> tier 1 extension

This forum really helped me in getting my initial HSMP approved; heres the time line

start date on passport HSMP->13-July 2007
end date -> 12th July 2009

Whts the earliest date i can apply for extension using tier 1 ; can i convert my hsmp to tier 1 n get an implicit extension.

I am looking to switch my company but this visa expiry date is hindering my prospects; as some companies are reluctant to hire ppl with less than 1 yr remiaing on the passport.
