I just wanted to point out that you don't have to be broke/use all your savings, before you can claim Universal Credit (if you are allowed to take public funds). Universal Credit is a short term help for those in need and has a generous cap of 16k. Those who can take UK public funds and have savings/capital etc under 16k, can claim Universal Credit; over 6k will reduce the monthly UC payment slightly.

Universal Credit is a monthly claim, which means unlike the unlike the benefit called Tax Credit that UC replaces, there is nothing to repay at the end of the tax year.

Those parents who were not able to claim the Tax Credit welfare benefit because they earned too much, might find they can claim Universal Credit if they live in a high rent area.
