Can dual citizen baby daughter enter UK on return trip using US passport?

Hi. I am a British citizen and my wife is a US citizen who resides in the UK with FLR (M). My wife and 12 week old daughter (born in the UK but automatically a dual UK/US citizen) will be travelling to the US for two weeks very soon. We are applying for a US passport for the child, as it is a legal requirement for American citizens to enter the US on a US passport. We don't have a British passport for the child. Will it be okay for the child to enter the UK on the return trip on a US passport? My wife can show the baby's British birth certificate to the border agent, if necessary. Thanks.

Its something we could have done, but we haven't got much time left now unfortunately, and to get an urgent British passport is quite costly.

Since I made this thread, I've found out that our child can enter the UK on a US passport, but that it would be wise if my wife takes with her further evidence of our child's British citizenship, which she can show to the border agent if need be. My wife will bring our child's British birth certificate, my British birth certificate, our marriage certificate, and a copy of the biometric page of my British passport. There's just one more thing I want to check; do you know if my wife is allowed to travel with these documents of mine when I will not be travelling with her?
