No. The application form is quite clear. All applications are based on information stored in your passport.

You can make a statutory declaration using your ID card.

Hi littlerr and thanks. I thought citizens of the European Union wouldn't need it. You mean i could apply with my ID but a statutory declaration is needed? Does it also work with expired Passports?

No. You need to make an application based on your current passport. The application form is self explanatory - it asks for passport number, not your ID card number.

The ID card can be used when you make the statutory declaration. That means, you can bring your ID card instead of your passport to a solicitor to sign the application.

EU regulations cover your rights to live in a different EU country with a national ID card, but it does not extend to citizenships. Each country sets their own requirements in terms of what is required to be naturalised.

Hi littlerr and thanks for the detailed explanation. Would it work with a temporary passport too? Together with the expired regular passport.

And for dual citizens? Is it possible to use a non-eu passport which was never used to enter ireland?

I don't know what you meant by 'temporary passport'.

No. Non-EU passports need to be registered for residence permission, so you cannot use them if you haven't used them to enter Ireland before.

I advise that you read through the application form (Form 8). Instructions are very clear in terms of what documents are needed for EU and non-EU applicants.

Just noticed it changed my text to emoji.. I was meant to say Form 8 .

I don’t suppose there is anything that prevents you from submitting a 1-year passport from the policy point of view, but do expect questions from INIS. They do ask a lot of questions after you submit applications if they find anything out of norm.

Thank you and the same to you.
Actually, starting from today, there is a new scorecard approach to required documents. Passport, ID card and emergency passport are all mentioned in the requirements. See below.
