Apply BNO visa with overstay record

Hi,

I am a BNO passport holder and intend to apply for BNO Visa for immigrating into the UK, however in 25 years ago I have overstayed for 5 years in UK while I first entered UK as a student.

I was detented for a few days by Home Office before I left UK on my own expense. I am not sure what kind of "return" it was , and I was not given any relevant document. With such a long overstay record , would it affect my application? Please advise, Thanks a lot everyone!
