Using EU and UK passports together for travel

Hello,

Me and my family all each hold both an EU passport and a British one. We live in the UK.

When we went to an EU country over Easter, we did the following: we gave the airline the details of our EU passports and presented these to border control both on entering and leaving the EU country. When we got to UK passport control at Stansted we presented only our British passports to enter. No stamps or visas were applied and no one questioned anything at any point.

Is this OK, legal? Is this actually a good way to beat the queues in the light of Brexit?

Now just got the small issue of one of my children's British passport has expired and we are going to Europe next week for a few weeks. Hope they let her back in the country, as by the time we return, her EU passport will be within 6 months of expiry as well...
