Skilled Worker visa extension application deadline

When is the latest date can I apply for the skilled worker extension https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/extend-your-visa with respect to my current visa expiry date?

Is it important that the UKVCAS appointment is booked before that date?

The reason I'm asking is that my employer has applied for a renewal of CoS for me, but it might arrive too late.

I am, indeed, but as a backup I would like to find out about this Tier 2 extension.
If worse comes to worst, I'd know what to tell HR.

You don't need an extension. It's a waste of money.

Date of application is the date your submit and pay online and you must apply on or before the visa expiry date, whether an extension or ilr. The biometric appointment is irrelevant to this.
