visit while processing?

Hi,

Was just wondering, I'm about to be submitting family class sponsorship to be with my wife. I'm a UK citizen, she is Canadian. While it processes, am I ok to visit? I'd like to stay for as long as possible, 6 month visit. From what I've found out, I would likely be given a 6 month stamp (I've had one before when I visited for a month), with a possible extension available? Does that sound about right?

Thanks for any help, it can be so hard to find any official website information sometimes.
