Previous immigration history

Good morning all and thank you for your help and advise in advance.

My cousin applied for a scholarship at Manchester university to study a PHD. She was successful. Unfortunately, she was told by the university before applying for a student visa that she had an adverse immigration history and is not illegible for the scholarship.

She got married about 5 years ago to a UK national, came to the UK on a spouse and was sent back to Pakistan after a couple of months by the husband/in-laws. Her father in law left her in Pakistan without her BRP so she could not travel back and her husband told her that she shouldn't bother coming back to the UK.

She continued her life in Pakistan and only found out about her adverse immigration history now. We all thought the in laws must of told the Home Office what had happened (obviously not) I assume the Home Office think she is living illegally in the UK as she never applied for an extension to her spouse visa.

She wants to clear her name and immigration status but has no idea where to start from and who to write too in order to reapply for a scholarship next year.

Any ideas?

Has the university elaborated what the nature of the adverse immigration history is suuposed to be?

Leaving the UK before a settlement visa expires and not returning/applying for the next step to settlement is neither illegal nor rare.

Is she still married to the individual who abandoned her abroad?

She might want to request a SAR to see what kind of information is held in the immigration systems:

Has she asked the university the question?

If an organization withdraws my scholarship due to some sort of alledged wrongdoing on my part in the past, I am on the phone first thing asking what is going on!

I am not sure what kind of paper she has but she may well still be married in the eyes of the UK authorities. It may be a good idea, to get advice from a family lawyer well versed in UK/Pakistani divorce cases and to get an official document from the Pakistani court system.
