Russian gay teen escaping to UK / seeking asylum

Post by Madirex » Fri Apr 07, 2023 10:31 am

Hello, I am 17 years old, I live in Russia (Khabarovsk, the Far-Eastern part of the county) and I am gay. Finishing Grade 11 in 2 months. I plan to escape to a UK alone without my family after finishing school (summer this year), possibly with the opportunity of staying there forever. I only know two languages, Russian and English.

I'm scared for my life because of homophobia in russia, because of my political views, and because I am an atheist. I could get killed because of being gay and I could get jailed because I do not support the Russian government (I am pro-Ukrainian, even did some "partisan work" and i can get jailed at any time (and yes, I have proof of that for the interview when applying for an Asylum Seeker status)). I have no relatives in other countries.

I'm looking for ANY way to escape this hellhole, i am tired of having to hide my sexuality just because i can get killed for it. Plus, I feel like this country won't hold for much longer (especially if Ukraine will have a successful counteroffensive soon and Russia would have to announce the second mobilization wave), so I'll have to escape anyways.

About finances: I have a PC that I could sell for 500-700GBP (won't be able to move it with me anyways), and I'll also get a job in summer which will get me at least 300 additional GBP.

If you know about any ways to escape Russia to UK, please tell me. I've been reading alot about the Asylum Seeking process, but it requires me to get into UK first, and currently that's the biggest concern for me.

P. S. I've been studying English on Duolingo / Discord / YouTube since 2017 and i have almost no problems with it.
P. P. S. People online already told me to contact the Rainbow Railroad organization, but i guess they don't know that it only helps people above the age of 18... So yeah, that is not an option.

I have never asked about any illegal advice. Crossing the Russian border for teens is legal (above the age of 16) if their parents consent to that. I'm just confused on how exactly I could escape...

But what about crossing the British border?
There's no humanitarian visa which enables you to travel to the UK in your circumstances, I think. That and the fact you would need a visa to go to the UK in almost all cases (unless a few specific ones, but I won't touch on them here) makes your query a request to elaborate on entering the border without a legal right to be in the country.

Also you're right about legally crossing the borders with parents' consent, but you'd still need it to be notarized and have a foreign passport (загранпаспорт,if you wish) in hand, should you wish to travel anywhere but few select countries.

My advice would be to discuss your family tree with relatives and see if there's any links to other countries which will aid you with citizenship, eg Italy. That would be long, but legal and not as costly way. You would also be able to start the process while being in a third country.

Yes, I do have a foreign passport, my parents made it for me in 2013 and it's still in action, i just never had the chance to use it since we never even left the country (no idea why i have it). Is it possible for me to get a tourist visa and then claim asylum in UK after arriving, or will that also be considered illegal?

And no, as I've said already, there's no relatives in other countries. They all live in russia and I'd never be table to convince them to leave the country no matter how hard I'll try.

Why do you specifically want to come to the UK??
Is it possible for me to get a tourist visa and then claim asylum in UK after arriving, or will that also be considered illegal?
To get a tourist visa, you have to prove, with evidence, your ties to your home country and financial circumstances and what the purposes of your visit would be. How would you prove that?

I'm afraid you would not be able to get a visa in your current circumstances. Take a look at yourself from the visa officer's point of view: no money on hand really, no parents travelling with you, no ties to home country (no car/place to live/job/etc). I would say chances are extremely high you'll be refused.

if it's a biometric passport, they have a 10 year validity. I urge you to take this into account when making travel plans/renewal applications, so you're not stranded without a foreign document if you do decide to travel abroad. Besides, a lot of countries (not sure if UK is on the list) want at least 6 months' validity on your passport before granting you the visa.
