question regarding residency

How long would you have to be in the UK to apply for residency and what is an ILR and is it the same as claiming residency

I'm not too sure where to look this up, was wondering if anyone could help me.
I'm confused is an ILR what is needed to apply for residency and how long do you have to be in the UK to apply, I read it was 5 years but then noticed that for an ILR its 10 years. I'm very confused.

I found out what an ILR is its to obtain UK residency with no migration control.
is an ILR obtained once you have been made a resident of the UK?

Giuseppe_S: 'Residency' can just mean you reside here, regardless of your immigration status. I think we need more details to help you.

In really simple terms:
Limited Leave to Remain means that you have a visa (ex: student, spouse, work permit) with an expiry date. If you fulfil the requirements on Limited Leave to Remain, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, sometimes referred to as permanent residency. Different visas have different requirements before you can apply for ILR (2 yrs, 5 yrs, 10 yrs, etc.)

What is your current status? nationality?
