Question about BRP retention for child's citizenship

Post by quqqulu » Sat Jan 27, 2024 2:36 pm

Hello everyone,

My child was born when I had the Skilled Worker BRP there we got him Dependant BRP. After that, I obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and my child received British citizenship through registration (MN1) certificate.
  • 1st question: Should my wife and I keep our Skilled Worker BRPs, considering our child's potential future claim to British citizenship?
  • 2nd question: Looking ahead, once we eventually acquire British citizenship in the future Should we retain our ILR BRPs?
  • 3rd question: Do we need to keep child's Dependant BRP for any reason?
I want to know which documents I shouldn't return so my child don't have issues with British Citizenship claims in the future.

Your childs claim to citizenship is the formal act of registering on form MN1. The registration certificate is proof of citizenship.

ILR BRPs are only to be retained if the child was born in the uk AFTER a parent got ILR, which makes the child automatically british.

ILR or any other immigration status is lost when someone becomes British. Your child is a British citizen now
Any BRP will be invalid after becoming British and you MUST return the BRP to the UKVI or you could face a fine. To travel to the UK as a British citizen, you should either apply to get a British passport or get a Certificate Of Entitlement sticker in your current passport.
