British Citizen Application for my son

Post by kkb8689 » Wed Oct 09, 2024 7:07 pm

Hi All

Arrived in the UK on a spouse visa to a british citizen April 2019
I have a dependant son from my previous marriage whom i initially left back home to come and settle in before applying for him to join. Due to covid, we didnt end applying for him to join us until later on. He joined me and my husband Nov 2023

My son and I applied for ILR in May 2024 and we were both granted our ILR on the 26th September 2024.

As I am married to a British Citizen and been granted ILR, I am thinking of applying for my naturalisation straight away meaning now.

My question is, can my son also apply for naturalisation/registration with me? He is now 15 and have only had his ILR for less than a month and lived in the Uk for 11 months in total. Does he have to wait until he’s had ILR for 1 year?

If he can apply now, can his application be made on the same form as mine or will he need a different form for his application?

Are there any solictors or immigration experts or anyone here that's had a similar experience with this topic that can help please?

This website has been so helpful with my ILR application and hoping I can reply on your expertise again.
Many thanks in advance.

Children over the age of 13 are expected to to have lived in the UK for at least two years before registering as British citizens.

It may be best for him to wait for a year.

Thank you very much buddy! We will wait until he’s had his ILR for 12 months then and that will give him 2 years in total of living in the Uk as well, also at that time I will have my British citizenship as well as I will go ahead with just my application for now. Many thanks again

Wait until he has completed 2 years in the UK but definitely apply for his registration before he turns 18, as naturalisation is more expensive and he would need to also sit for the tests.
