Must I tell Universal Credit that I got married abroad?

Post by OneTrickPony » Wed Oct 23, 2024 11:40 am

I married my wife abroad and she still lives abroad in May 2023 but I did not inform Universal Credit about that. She is unemployed and does not receive any income in the country where she lives. My claim was still ongoing that time and my reasoning for not telling was from what I read on my UC account: because I remained living alone at my address and not getting any help from my wife from abroad then I should be still classsified as single. Now I am thinking did I make a mistake by not telling them? Should I tell my work coaches that I am married even though I live alone in the UK? The reason I am asking is because I have received some payments from UC while being married (but living separately) and up until now although I work full time I receive some 'limited capability to work' payments.

No, you only report a partner that you are living with, in the UK.

I went ahead and reported it anyway and they were absolutely indifferent to that information I've given to them. Their advisor on the phone even told me he cannot add it to my account anywhere as there is apparently no tab/button for reporting a marital status change which I already kind of realised myself. So totally agree.
