Running youtube on Tier 2 dependent visa

Post by jg90 » Sun Jan 19, 2025 8:27 am

I am on a Tier 2 Dependent Visa, and my wife holds a Tier 2 Skilled Worker Visa. Together, we run a YouTube channel where we share career-related content. The channel is managed through my Google account, and any payments are deposited into my bank account. I understand that skilled worker visa holders face restrictions regarding running a YouTube channel. Could having the channel formally under my name, while my wife contributes to creating the content, potentially impact her skilled worker visa status or her application for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the future?

Interesting question - there is a tax avoidance scheme that depends on the artificial management of income to state that one party is not responsible for the other parties income. The hairdresser chair rental scheme is one such example.

What is that to do with the sponsored skilled worker visa... in essence you are using the reverse of the scheme to claim that it is your income rather than your partners. If the Home Office were to become aware (a big if) they might make the claim that you are artificially managing the income to avoid the perception that your partner is employed. AND work is defined as paid and unpaid so regardless by appearing in a monetised YouTube channel she is "working" regardless of how the financial arrangements are managed.

A risk, perhaps not a big risk but one to be aware of none the less.

Don't forget HMRC! Check if you need to tell HMRC about your income from online platforms:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-yo ... -platforms
You may or may not be liable to income tax.
HMRC don't care about your visa ....
