Information about marriage and permit to work in Uk

Post by MikeBear » Tue May 27, 2025 3:39 pm

Hello everyone. First of all, this is my first post here so sorry if somethings wrong.
Second, here's my actual situation:

I'm italian, living in Italy, and my gf is british, living in London. We are planning to get married and since we see our future in the UK I've started researching about what should I do to move there. Now, I think I've understood most of it, there are only a couple of things that are not very clear to me.

1) After demonstrating that our relationship is legit and that we intend to get married I can get a 6 months long permit to stay and in those 6 months we have to get married, will this permit also allow me to find a job and work?
2) Referring to point one, in case I'm not allowed to work unless i get married, does that mean that we would have to make do on her sole income?
3) one of the requierements is to have a combined income of 29k (more or less) but, always referring to point one and two, how am I supposed to do that if I cannot work as soon as I get there?

I hope I've been clear enough and I thank you all for the time you too to read all the way down here. Feel free to ask questions in case you need to know anything else :)

1. You cannot work while on a 6 month fiance visa. This visa is only to facilitate your marriage and give you time to apply for a spouse visa.

2. Yes. You can only work once you have a spouse visa.

3. For an initial fiance visa and switching to a spouse visa, you would need to rely only on her income yes, or substantial savings.

2) Referring to point one, in case I'm not allowed to work unless i get married Not just get married, you have to apply and be granted a spouse visa first, does that mean that we would have to make do on her sole income? Yes, that's what the sponsorship is all about. She'd have confirmed and attested to the HO that she's capable of supporting you.
3) one of the requierements is to have a combined income of 29k (more or less) but, always referring to point one and two, how am I supposed to do that if I cannot work as soon as I get there? To enter the UK, your income would not be considered. She has to solely meet the financial threshold.

I hope I've been clear enough and I thank you all for the time you too to read all the way down here. Feel free to ask questions in case you need to know anything else :)
No sin in failing, you just have to try and try again!

Note that with regards to the £29,000 minimum income requirement, your girlfriend/wife will need to demonstrate that she has earned a salary equivalent to that annual amount for at least six months before the date of the spouse visa application.

As mentioned above, for the initial/first spouse visa application, only her income will be considered. For subsequent visa extensions (at the 2.5 year stage), the combined income can be taken into account.
