Could I be stateless?

Post by Starone » Fri Jun 27, 2025 8:36 pm

Dear Reader,

I have lived in the UK since 1979, when I arrived as a dependant on my mother’s shared passport.

The UK Home Office accepts that:
- I entered the UK using that shared passport,
- My current name and date of birth do not match the details on that passport,
- I have never held a Pakistani passport,
- Pakistani authorities informed them (after a biometric interview) that they could not locate any record of me.

Despite this, the Home Office issued my BRP and eVisa using only *two* of the *five* names listed on the original shared passport. They ignored the date of birth from that passport entirely.

Over the past 40 years, my name has shortened across official documents:
- **1979** (shared passport): 5 names
- **34 years** (provisional driving licence): 4 names
- **27 years** (full driving licence): 3 names
- **Now** (BRP/eVisa): 2 names

When I approached the Pakistani consulate with my shared passport copy and BRP, they confirmed the documents did not match. After conducting ground verification, they concluded I am "not of Pakistani origin" and issued a formal refusal letter for a passport.

As a result, I am trapped without any valid travel documents. I desperately need to travel but have no way to do so. This situation has become a legal catch-22.

I would be grateful for any practical advice on how to resolve this.

Where were you born? Do you have a birth certificate?

You may be eligible for a Certificate of Travel.

I was born in Pakistan. I am not aware of a birth certificate

This might be the best option, I just hope they do issue me one as my case is quite genuine. I have heard they are quite reluctant in issuing the travel document. I will give this a crack. Many thanks for.the guidance.

If you know of any relatives in Pakistan, you could request them to search the local birth records there with the name in the shared passport from 1979.

Unfortunately I don't have any ties to Pakistan. All of my family are UK based. Thanks for your suggestions though.

Home office Assigns a Unverified Nationality

Post by Starone » Sun Jun 29, 2025 10:59 am

Hi,

After a facilitated biometrics interview with the Pakistani Passport office and Nadra, the Home Office decided to assign me a Nationality that Pakistan denied.

Surely the Home office would need verification before designating a Nationality?

I have recently contacted the Pakistani consulate to try and obtain a Passport and they have reconfirmed that after their ground-verifications they can certify that I am not of Pakistani origin.

Can you explain what changed and why?

The Home Office revoked my indefinite leave to remain about 9 years ago and I won my case through private life in the UK. This is when they gave me a name that doesn't even match my full driving licence that I've held for 27 years

Why did the Home Office revoke your ILR and gave you a new name?

It wasn't based on dishonesty or deception that they revoked my Indefinite Leave. They were according to the law justified in doing so.

I have no foreign document that justifies the name that they have given me. There is no foreign document besides the shared passport. However, the first and last name on the brp matches my shared passport but three maiden names are omitted and the DOB is in the wrong format.
