Global Talent Visa – Exceptional Talent vs. Promise for Industry-Focused Applicant

Post by drijazfazil » Sun Jul 27, 2025 5:59 am

I need help determining whether to apply under Exceptional Promise or Exceptional Talent. Here's my full profile:

Academic Background
PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2018)

3 years as Postdoctoral Researcher:

Nanyang Technological University (NTU): Developed AI/CFD models for data centers

National University of Singapore (NUS): Urban climate resilience projects

10+ publications (mix of Q1-Q3 journals)

2 book chapters

Industry Experience (4 years)
CFD Consultant for engineering firms (including RED Engineering)

Award: E&T Innovation Award 2020 ("Highly Commended")

Key Question
With 7 years total post-PhD experience (3 academic + 4 industry):

Am I automatically disqualified from Exceptional Promise due to exceeding the 5-year typical limit?

If I must apply as Exceptional Talent:

Does my industry innovation (tools like DCWiz) compensate for fewer recent papers?

What type of recommendation letters are strongest—academic supervisors or industry managers?

Looking forward to your expert advice.
