Clarification on Birth Registration – Requirement of “NAQ Certificate”

Post by Khedkarsanto » Thu Aug 28, 2025 5:39 pm

I am in the process of registering the birth of my child at the High Commission of India in London for the purpose of applying for an Indian passport.

One parent is an Indian citizen and the other is a British citizen (by naturalization, previously Indian). We are fully aware that, by birth, our child is eligible for British citizenship; however, we do not wish to apply for British citizenship or a British passport for our child.

During our recent appointment, we were informed that we need to provide a “NAQ certificate” from the UK government, I have been unable to find any mention of this requirement on the official High Commission or VFS Global guidelines.

Could you kindly help me:

Is the NAQ certificate actually required for the birth registration process?

Given that we are already submitting the declaration form confirming that our child does not hold any other country’s passport, should any additional document be necessary?

If there are any specific requirements applicable to cases where one parent is British, please could you clarify them?

Your guidance would be greatly appreciated so that we can proceed with the application correctly.

Thanks
Sk.

If your child was born after you became British or was born in the uk when either parent held ILR, the child is automatically British by birth. It is. It not being "eligible", it is being born British as a fact.

Nothing that needs to be applied for in terms of the child's british citizenship.

They are likely asking for the non acquisition letter, which doesn't apply to you as your child is automatically British.

Thanks for your reply
This is where I am confused if the letter says British what’s the use as my application. It’s likely get rejected as India don’t allow dual citizenship, I wish if the website clarifies this for these situations.
Very confusing though
Question - Is there any way in future child can get back Indian citizenship?
