Minimum visa extension for GTV dependents

Post by RamyAbdallah » Sun Nov 16, 2025 12:26 pm

Hi All,

I was granted settlement under the Global Talent Visa (GTV) 3-year route, and my dependents now need to extend their visas for a maximum of 18 months to become eligible for their ILR applications.

A colleague in a similar situation required a 26-month extension for his dependents. He applied for a 30-month extension, which was an available option on the system. The Home Office later contacted him to request payment of the additional Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for the extra six months before processing the application.

My understanding is that once the main applicant obtains ILR, the minimum extension period available for dependents is three years, and the full IHS must be paid even if the dependent needs less than one year to qualify for ILR.

I would appreciate clarification on the following points:

1. Is the minimum dependent extension period indeed three years after the main applicant obtains settlement?

2. Should I apply for the 18 months my dependents actually need and wait to see whether the Home Office requests additional IHS, or will the application proceed without issue?

In my colleague’s case, did he have to apply for three years simply because his dependents needed more than two years, or is the three-year extension mandatory for everyone in this situation?

Any guidance on whether I should apply for an 18-month extension or a full three-year extension would be very helpful.

1. Yes, 3 years is stated in the immgrarion rules. You cannot choose to apply for a shorter duration.

2. It wont proceed. It is a 3 year extension, there is no discretion to give a shorter duration.

3 years is stated in the rules. There is no discretion or option to choose a lesser durarion.

It is also not mandatory to apply for ILR at exactly 5 years!!

GTV extension for dependents

Post by RamyAbdallah » Tue Nov 25, 2025 8:29 pm

Dear All,

I received my ILR in March 2025, while my family’s Global Talent Visa is due to expire in mid-December 2025. I need to extend their visas for another three years, and I understand that I must apply using the Global Talent extension route even though I now hold ILR. However, when I entered their visa end date (mid-December 2025), the IHS fee shown was only £517.

I have a few questions:

The application form includes an option to enter a UAN number. Should I provide the most recent UAN from my ILR application, or the previous one from my Global Talent application?

I entered my previous Global Talent BRP number, which I used when switching my dependants to the Global Talent route. Is this acceptable?

To ensure the correct IHS fee for a three-year extension, can I include the UAN from my ILR application and set the visa end date to December 2028 so that the full three-year IHS amount (£3,105) is calculated automatically? I want to avoid delays if the Home Office asks me to complete an underpayment, especially since entering the December 2025 date currently shows only £517.

@Zimba, @CR001
I would appreciate it if you could tell me the best solution for IHS payment.

For the IHS you put a date 3 years in the future from date you will submit online.

Hi @CR001
This means I need to set the visa end date to three years from the application date, rather than using the date shown on the BRP (15/12/2025). In this case, I will use the UAN and all details for the Global Talent Visa and only update the visa end date to reflect the extension period. Is that correct?
Thanks for your valuable advice
