Applying for pre-settled status: timing

Greetings to everyone,

I have a simple question:
Say, I apply for pre-settled status month before the expiration date of the family permit, shall I be illegal after that date? Do I need to leave if I don't get the decision on time?

It's about my mother actually, she got her permit yesterday.

You will get a Certificate of Application soon after you applied - you will have the same rights as you would already have had a pre-settled status.
