Child citizenship with single mother- both with ilr

Post by Damzek » Sat Aug 30, 2025 9:31 pm

Hi

My child and I gain ilr last year via 5 years route. I am a single parent alone in the uk with my child.

Upon applying for ilr, I demonstrated and prove sole responsibility for my child. The father is in a different country. (note: The father name is still on birth certificate).

As evidence, I use letters from school, clubs, payments, and bank statements and receipts, etc

Question: To apply for British citizenship, would I need to prove sole responsibility again by re-submitting up to date documents from the school, clubs, etc?

Or should i only provide my consent letter and explain that I submitted and demonstrated sole responsibility when applying for ilr last year?

Thank you for your reeponse

The requirement is to provide parents' consent.
If one parent is not present/able to give consent then that should be explained.
Referring to what you submitted for ILR should be helpful.

Thank you.

So no need to re-submit those documents to prove sole responsibility.

Thanks

"Have you made any previous UK immigration
applications in the UK or abroad?"

I have responded "No" to this question above by misunderstanding the question. Does this harm my application for Naturalisation? I have already submitted and done biometrics. I have done Tier 2 and ILR application before this application.

How can I correct the mistake?

It does not affect your statutory requirements. You can simply send an email to UKVI to explain the mistake.

Thank you very much for responding.

Application date: September 23, 2025
Biometric date: September 27, 2025

I noticed the mistake on Dec. 5 after a friend asked me what was my response to that question.

I sent email to FurtherNationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk and Citizenship support on Dec. 5 and Dec. 9 to explain and include my previous uk applications dates.

I am worried that it might affect my Good Character standing as I answered "No" when I should have said "yes".

I am still awaiting a response from the email and also a decision on my application.

Absolutely it will not have an effect on your good character. Your application is still well under 6 months so no reason to worry about a delay.

Hi

Citizenship Support responded to my email today stating that my application has been approved and I should wait for an invite to book my ceremony with the council.

Thank you very much for your responses.

This is the content of the email below. I guess I should be waiting for another email from home office with the INVITE? Or should I go ahead and book contact the council to book the ceremony?

Email was from Citizenship Support

" Good morning,

I can confirm your application has now been approved.

Your certificates are due to be printed and dispatched from our office within the next couple of days.

When you receive your invite, please arrange a ceremony with your local authority.

Kind regards"

It is worth getting in touch with your council. They will be aware you have been approved and they may already let you book the ceremony. You may need to wait another week or so to get the official approval email with the ceremony invite. If you don't, let the council know and arrange it with them.

Would the passport office ask for proof of court order or sole responsibility for a child's passport application if the child and the mother apply together and they have just been granted citizenship through naturalization?

The father is not living in the UK. His name on birth certificate, but plays no since 2021 and calls on average twice per month.

I have no direct experience relating to "parental responsibility" in connection with child passport applications.

There are two HMPO policy documents guiding their staff around the subject here:

"Parental responsibility: what it is and how we check for it"
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... le-version

"Parental responsibility: birth parents, adoption and surrogacy"
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... ility_when

Not sure this clarifies but it sounds like they will look for proof that you have parental responsibility.
In the absence of any further comments from members I would suggest you provide any documents/explanations you have provided for child's registration.

Thank you very much for this.

I applied for child citizenship application. Both our citizenship application were approved and we both did ceremony.

Father is living abroad and has not been supporting child. I submitted evidence during citizenship application of only me supporting child. UKVI didn't ask for father's consent during citizenship application.

Would the passport office require consent from father for child passport application?

We don't know what HMPO would do in every nuance of individual situation, they would expect proof that you are the only one to have parental responsibility (divorce papers, a court order for custody in your name). Provide same evidence that you did for child's citizenship application and see what they say. If you call their helpline ask to speak to a senior caseworker.
