What do with BRP now?

Post by indian89 » Wed Mar 04, 2026 3:53 pm

Got my british citizenship few days back. Thanks so much to all those that helped.

I used to have physical BRP for ILR which then switched to evisa few months before expiry of physical BRP.

Do I need to send the BRP back now? And where to?

Do you have children who were born after you obtained citizenship, and you applied for their British passport on the basis of your ILR? Then I would definitely keep it as it is the only proof of child's claim to British citizenship.
If not applicable I'd still keep it with my documents (that's just me).
Please ignore the threat of a £1000 fine if you don't return it.
We haven't had any credible reports of any member here fined.
And in any case they'd just shred it or bin it as it's no use now.

To paraphrase @alterhase58 slightly, were any of your children born in the UK between the time you were granted ILR and the date of your citizenship ceremony ?

If yes, that ILR card is proof if their citizenship and must be preserved by you.

Even otherwise, I recommend retaining the BRP, if only as a momento old your immigration journey.

I've archived all the immigration documentation and application form copies for my journey, in a just-in-case basis.
