Foreign Birth Registration

Post by BrexitEscapee » Thu Apr 09, 2026 9:01 pm

I've been tasked with helping some more of my family members get through the FBR process, and (because of the ongoing introduction of the EU entry/exit system) they've all been asking me how long it will be before they'll be able to use the EU passport queue at airports!

I can see there has been a change to this forum, i.e. there is now a pinned FAQ topic, in place of the extremely long-running discussion thread. I think this is an improvement, as the FAQ format keeps things much more concise and it's therefore much easier to find what you're after.

However, there isn't much in the FAQ about current waiting/processing times. I wouldn't want the FAQ topic to be flooded with people asking 'how long' or reporting their own progress, so (1) is that online spreadsheet still doing the rounds and, if so, could it be linked to in the FAQ? or (2) are their any recent applicants able to reply here with an idea of how long the process has taken?

Cheers.

They recently updated the website estimate from 9 months to 12. It seems to be taking just over 10 months from documents received to FBR approved and then another couple of weeks for the cert to arrive.

There's currently a bit of a backlog on first adult passport applications so those are taking around 2 months, but who knows how long that'll take when their applications are approved.

The spreadsheet and details about it are here https://reddit.com/r/IrishCitizenship/w ... preadsheet

That's brilliant - thanks for the link to the spreadsheet. I had previously found it online via a Google search, but I thought it must have been an obsolete version as the dates on the last few entries looked strange. However, having had another look, I can see that the important columns are C and E, and if you just scroll down looking at those, you can quickly get a feel for the wait times by comparing them. The entries in the last few rows do contain a few anomalies, but if you look a bit further up, there's plenty of consistent data to confirm it's currently around 10 or 11 months. My relatives will be grateful to you, as this will give them confidence that they'll have an Irish passport in time for next year's summer hols.
