XXX in British passport

Post by pythonista » Wed Jul 08, 2026 9:07 pm

I became a British citizen after previously holding an Indian passport.

My documents are as follows:

- Indian passport (now surrendered):
- Given Name: Tomato Sauce
- Surname: (blank)

- UK Certificate of Naturalisation:
- Given Name: XXX
- Surname: Tomato Sauce

- UK Passport:
- Given Name: XXX
- Surname: Tomato Sauce

My actual birth name has always been Tomato Sauce. HM Passport Office told me they issued the passport this way because my Indian passport had no surname. They also said they couldn't change it unless the Indian passport was corrected first, but I have already surrendered my Indian passport after becoming a British citizen.

I'm about to apply for an OCI card and will also be travelling internationally soon.

Has anyone successfully changed their UK passport from the "XXX" format to a normal Given Name: Tomato/ Surname: Sauce format after naturalisation and passport issuance?

If so:
- Did you use a deed poll?
- Was it an unenrolled deed poll?
- Did you need a replacement naturalisation certificate?
- What evidence did HM Passport Office require?
- Were there any issues with OCI, airline bookings, or immigration before or after the change?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through or knows about this situation.

It wasn't clear if the name you had provided was your actual name or not.

I have therefore replaced the name you provided with a suitably banal alternative.

Sorry I should have mentioned that I already changed it to a fictitious name but appreciate your attention to that.

Any suggestions with the best person to recommend a solution?
