Naturalisation for unmarried partner

Post by daddyyluv » Tue Aug 18, 2026 11:32 pm

Good evening everyone,

Please i need your advice. My cousin is british, has an unmarried partner and 4 children, his partner got ILR through the unmarried partner living together route. They now want to apply for nauralisation, does his partner qualify to apply before 12months of holding ILR?

Partner needs to be married or in a civil partnership with a BC. If neither then partner needs to wait 12 months from the date of gaining ILR.

Naturalisation is not a part of the immigration pathway, which ends at ILR. It has its own laws, rules and requirements, which can vary considerably from immigration law and rules.

In order to naturalise less than 12 months after ILR, the applicant must be married to (or be in a civil partnership with) a British citizen, as alterhase58 has mentioned above.

An unmarried durable partnership does not count for the purpose of naturalisation.
I am not a lawyer or immigration advisor. My statements/comments do not constitute legal advice. E&OE. Please do not PM me for advice.
