Are my children british citizens?

Post by rmbrown » Thu Mar 12, 2009 11:43 am

Hi, my wife and I came here on a 2yr work permit from SA, and whilst on that visa my eldest child was born (now 12yrs old). Since then, we have been on an ancestral visa, and then got permanent leave to remain in the UK in 2001. We have since 2001 had 2 more children born in the UK. We are now in the process of applying to be naturalised (yes, should have done it years ago!) in order to become british citizens and apply for passports, however, I cannot find any information on whether my children are already british citizens, or whether they need to apply for citizenship before applying for a british passport. Any help, or pointing me in the direction of the right people to ask would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

The ones born after you got ILR are British, the older child needs to be registered as a British citizen (entitlement).

Thank you for your quick response. I was hoping that wasn't the case, as it is £400 to register a child as a British Citizen!
Thanks

Recommended to get the application in now, as if it is received at the Home Office on or after 6 April, it will be GBP460.

Naturalisation fees are also going up. Of course, you now have to do the Life in the UK Test. You do not have to delay your child's application - he or she is entitled to apply regardless, based on U.K. birth + your ILR.
