Dependent family member app - how long to decision

Post by bototo » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:22 am

I applied for permanent stay for my mother (previous thread) in January.

Anyone knows roughly how long these decisions are taking?

OK, maybe you can answer me this: As the sponsor, can I get my passport back from the HO without jeopardising the application or causing it delay?

You can't, you must leave it with them until they make a decision regarding the application.
If you ask your passport back, you will need to re-apply again and wait again.

Wrong about what?
If you ask your passport back, you will need to re-apply
So, effectively, a sponsor is held captive in the UK for however long it takes the Home Office to decide an application? That seems preposterous but should I not be surprised?

Unfortunately that's the case, and you should not be surprised indeed.

In another thread they're talking about the process taking 3.5-4 months. Any comment on that anyone?

It's gone very quite. The silence in this corner is deafening :)

Hi Good people

I know some us us are struggling with finances and some can't even get a job until they get a decision with their passports from the HO. Therefore, it is EXPENSIVE calling those 0870/0845xxxxxxxxx numbers that the Home office generally provides.
Don't give up, now you can call Home Office for free, just check out www.saynoto0870.com and you will be provided with a local 0208/0151/0161xxxxxx number where you can contact HO for FREE! The actual number is 01516725626. (But log on to www.saynoto0870.com and confirm for yourself)
Especially if you have a pay monthly home or mobile telephone contract. You can still call from a pay as you go mobile but the charge rate will be like you are calling your neighbour next door on any 0208xxxxxxxx number.
Good luck Razz (Please share with others if it works for you!)

I know I said it's quiet but that wasn't quite an invitation to post the same advertising message you've been posting in other threads. ;) Some may call it SPAM.

Have you tried to get your passport back yet?

From earlier posts I understood that I couldn't ask for the passport back without effectively withdrawing the application. Are you saying there's a way to do it?

You're the sponsor, not the applicant. I thought that where spouses apply for ILR for example, the GBR/settled spouse gets their passport back before the application has been decided. You can only try.

I was reluctant to try if there was any chance it could impact on the application. What are the chances of them replying to my request by just keeping the £750 and returning the whole application?

Also, do you know how long these applications are taking? If the average is under six months it may be better to exercise patience a little longer.

I don't think it will have an impact on the application, it is your document after all. Get some advice about this, or just ask UKBA.

Just an update - the decision took six months (for those of you tracking the time).
