Question on 40,000 pound requirement

Post by LindaElane » Sun Jul 31, 2005 12:48 am

The HSMP application states that, based on my living in the US, I need to have made 40,000 pounds from my "economic activities".

I'm a maths teacher. My salary might come close to 40,000 pounds, but it might fall just under.

My question is, can I have more than one job? Will the income from the second job count? If it does, does my second job have to be related to teaching maths?

Also, my "economic activity" includes investing. Does income from investing count in the 40,000 pounds of income?

Thanks if anyone has had experience with an application in which you used income from multiple jobs/sources and can let me know.

someone on here had just under the required money level and submitted it anyway. You could try that

Hello
You second job income can be considered as long as it is related your profression in someway and taxes are paid. Investment income can't be part of your earnings.

Given that the dollar is getting a bit stronger, you may want to wait a touch longer so that that the more favourable exchange rate gets you over the finish line.

Thanks for the help everyone! But this does lead to another question.

In the United States, we have to pay about seven percent of our salary into social security. Unless I am mistaken, we are not taxed on this income. At least, when we list our income for tax purposes, we don't show what was sent directly to social security.

Does this mean that I cannot count that as "income"? If it does mean that, then it will be very difficult indeed for me to meet the 40,000 pound requirement.

Oh, and one other thing. Any guesses on whether the 40,000 pound requirement will be moved up in the forseeable future? Has it been moved up in the past?
