Is NI number required before taking up a job in the UK?

Post by topoftheworld » Mon May 09, 2005 5:16 pm

Hi All,
Is NI number a MUST before taking up a permanant job offer? I have been working as a contractor for past two months. But, I am soon going to take up a permanant job offer in mid June.
At present, I do not have a NI number, but I have got an appointment for NI number.Unfortunately, the appointment date for NI number is after my new job start date.Is this a problem?

Please advice ASAP.

Many Thanks,

A National Insurance Number is your tax number while you are working in the UK. When you first arrive you will be able to work on a temporary number, however it is advisable to apply for a permanent number as soon as possible.

You will need to contact your local Department for Work and Pensions office to organise an appointment and they will issue your number 4 - 8 weeks later. If you do not have this number you may be taxed at a higher tax rate known as emergency tax. Once you have your permanent number let your employers know so they can tax you at the correct rate. If you have been paying a higher rate of tax you may be eligible for a tax refund.

They will not give you NI number before you start working. This is from my personal experience and from my collegues.

But you could start working if you have legagl document that allow you to do so:
for example: Student to take p/t job up to 2o hrs/week, WP documnet holder, HSMP, etc

If you start working go to the Jobcentre in your city and they will give you the telephone number where they arrange the interview date. Sometimes (not Always) they will give Temporary number something like TN+your date of birth. But normally they will only give temporary number for the permanent employment or high paid. This is their interest becuase you will pay the tax.
