effect of application fee on maintenance requirement

Post by shpaghetts » Fri May 08, 2009 2:11 am

I'm sorry if this question is daft, but I was wondering: what if the actual payment of the application fee puts your bank balance below the maintenance requirements?

I have an appointment on May 14 to switch from a work permit to a tier 1 general, have up-to-date bank statements as of May 2 which ought to be sufficient to meet the maintenance requirements, but if you do a hypothetical deduction of the £1,020 application fee, I'm suddenly on the wrong side of the £800 line.

I guess one way to avoid it all is to just pay the application fee on the day with a credit card instead of my debit card, but has anyone else has this similar issue? I wouldn't imagine this should be an issue, but I don't know if the Home Office would consider the issue in that way. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

You should be fine since your bank statement fullfill all requirements. As far as application fees is considered it should be fine. You can go ahead with your application
Yes you can surely pay by Credit card if you want. Although paying by debit card will not affect your visa application.

Strictly speaking the maintenance funds are for sustaining yourself once you are in UK and not for paying the VISA fee or buying the airline ticket. So if your case goes to a caseworker who goes by the book (in spirit as well) he might call your bank and discover, to your horror, that the funds have dropped below minimum requirement. Use another account/ borrow/use credit card to make payments for your VISA fee

Very fair point. Thanks everyone very much for the advice. I particularly hadn't considered they might ring up the bank, so that makes this whole debate a bit of a no-brainer. I guess I've been averse to the credit card after having climbed out of the grad school-induced debt, but i suppose this is a worthy cause :)

Someone also pointed something else out to me. If for some reason my application gets rejected, I wouldn't be able to apply again for another 3 months while I wait for my maintenance requirements to be met again! Better to be pragmatic, I guess.

Will try and report back on my experiences in case anyone is interested in my in-person experiences in the Sheffield PEO -- hopefully with good news.
