Visitor visa is straightforward, just need plenty of of proof of reasons to return, otherwise the ECO's will assume as I did....
Not really necessary, as long as you explain in your sponsorship letter that he is infact your father in law. I think the application form also asks for the applicant to state his/her relationship with the sponsor. My husband and I sponsored my sister once, and I didn't need to prove that she was my sister.
